Many of you may have already read in the news that a fellow PCV here in the Philippines has been missing now for one week. I wanted to first let you all know that I am fine and very safe! However we are all very shaken up by this experience. Julia Campbell is the name of the PCV, she is from last years batch and almost ready to finish her service here the end of May. While I never met Julia personally many of my closer friends in Peace Corps knew her very well, in fact the closet PCV distance wise to me from Julia's batch saw her the day before she went missing. Below I will be including some of the e-mails the country staff here has been sending us regarding the search that is underway to find Julia.
I also want to dispel some the false accusation that the US press has made regarding the possible involvement of rebels and the NPA- New Peoples Army who do have camps in the northern region. We have no reason to believe any of these groups were involved and I want to encourage you all to recognize that the press often sensationalizes things! Heidi and I were just in the areas Julia is considered to be lost in and felt extremely safe. The mountain people here are the nicest and most caring Filipinos I know!
We are all praying that Julia is found and I hope that you will all do the same. Please keep her family, all the Peace Corps Philippines Staff that is working so hard to find her and my fellow PCV's in your prayers. As more news comes I will keep you all posted.
Thanks for your prayers and thoughts, we are all trying to stay positive that the search party will find Julia soon.
I was just informed by Peace Corps Staff that the Peace Corps Director will be arriving in Manila sometime this week to meet with PCV's, also tomorrow a specialist will be arriving and heading directly to the region she is considered lost in to work with the U.S. Embassy and other members of the ground search party. There will also be a psychologist arriving from PC Headquarters to meet with any PCV that might need to talk.
Please keep all these people in your thoughts and prayers!!
All my love,
