Indonesia is the fourth largest country in the world, it has a population of 242 million. Indonesia has 17,500 islands. It became independent from Holland in 1945.

Medan is not a nice city, we are pleased to be leaving. We are now on our way to Bukit Lawang, a place in the hills 3 hours from Medan, 400m above sea level. We are hoping to see orang-utans here. Orangutan means man or people of the jungle in Malay and Indonesian.

There are only 2 places in the world where you can find orang-utans, Bukit Lawang and Borneo. Fingers crossed, we will trek into the jungle with a guide hoping to find them tomorrow.

Bukit Lawang is a small village situated on a river, each side of the river are shops and places to stay.

We are staying in a very basic room, it has 2 beds, a fan, mosquito nets and it is costing £3.50 per night. Cold water and no basin, just a bucket.

Bukit Lawang means door to the hills.
