What can I say about the last week that will not be overshadowed by the difficult and horrible events of today???? Hmmmm???? I have had enough of Salamanca. It was cool to stay there and I have eaten enough pork to last me a lifetime. I made some very nice friends and played hoops almost everyday that we had without rain. I have improved my Spanish by leaps and bounds. I was able to give some lessons of basketball in almost all Spanish 3 days ago. I have been going out to dinner with a large group of people over the last 2 weeks and I have been able to order for the group and I have not messed anyone else's order up! Thanks Salamanca for being such a tremendous starting point to this adventure through Spain!
I am on a train in first class riding through the center of Spain with huge green pastures on my left and a glass of Cava in my right hand. The seat is plush and I have enough space to write this entry. The outcome of this day can seem a bit luxurious at first glance but let me assure you that it did not start out that way.
Last night was "mi ultima dia en Salamanca". This is a big deal every Thursday to the students at my school. There is always someone leaving on Friday night or Saturday morning...so every Thursday we have fiestas grande!! Last night happened to feature yours truly. We walked around the city from one tapas spot to another drinking and eating pork. This place is like a vegetarians worst nightmare. I mean there are huge pieces of pig swinging in your face almost everywhere you go.
After consuming enough pig to make Kermit mad we shoved off to the "Chup". The "Chup" is short for the chupiteria, which if you remember from a previous entry was deadly for me in the past and proved deadly again last night. After god knows how many shots of terrible instant headache "alcohol" we stumbled through the streets to a new destination. But your boy was in true form because along the way he spotted a Doner Kebob place that was open at 3 or 4am. After devouring a doner and some patatas fritas (French fries) I headed to the discoteca.
Here in Spain you should really stick to using "discoteca" and avoid saying "I went to the club". Everyday in class our profesora asks us what we have done or what we are planning to do. The first week I said that I went to a club and she nearly keeled over. A club here means brothel and not a place of music, booze and dancing. Just a heads up fo ya!
Getting back to the story I was really hurting today because returning home around 4:30 the Celtics Lakers game was on TV and I watched that. I slept for about 2-3 hours then I had class til 1pm and a 1:40 train to catch. Oh and I didn't pack last night. I got to the train station and realized I had left my copy of my ticket at the piso I was in. I finally got on the train to Madrid and fell right asleep. I woke up with a man tapping on my shoulder saying, I think because it was in very rapid Spanish, that we had reached our final destination and get my stank booty off the train.
I got out and said to myself wow!, Madrid is a lot smaller than I remembered. And whoa that's weird they have a sign that says "Bienvendido a Palencia". I thought Palencia was in the north west of Spain and I was in Madrid in the center of Spain. Shit! I took the wrong train. After being told several times that I would not be able to get to Madrid til the morning I finally convinced the guy to let me just stand in the food car (other wise known as giving him 10 euro). I am pretty sure for the next 3 hours I was made fun of by everyone in the food car that I had all my stuff with me.
I have a tendency to practice my Spanish when I am alone and I look like I am talking to myself which I am sure didn't impede the making fun of me. So the day only got worse as it went on as I tried to find my way to Marbella. However, as I write I am only about 1 hour away from Marbella and what was supposed to be a 5 hour trip has become 11 hours. But I have been drinking Cava y Cune de Rioja and I am feeling like everything is turning out greeeeeaaaaatttttt!!
So I have changed my plans a little. I am headed to Marbella for the weekend then Madrid for a week. After that its Barcelona!!! Barca Barca Barca!!!!
Love y'all and congrats to Chad and Wendy!!!!
