Well today has been quite exciting, but I'll save that for later!
Yesterday, I went to my first NZ mall (what girl can resist a foreign mall?)! I went to the New Zealand equivalent of Walmart, which is called The Warehouse. I had to buy a rain jacket (even though it's been dry, I know it'll rain eventually) and some shampoo/conditioner. The only reason I'm even mentioning what I bought is because I wanted to comment on the price: shampoo/conditioner is $6.99 NZD...each; and that was the cheap stuff! Even with the conversion back to USD it's $5.83, which is a bit much. But it was a necessity, so I didn't have much choice. That's been a big shock for me. Another big difference is the gas (petrol here) price: over $2/liter. That doesn't sound bad until you realize that there are almost 4 liters in a gallon. Which means that gas is almost $8/gallon! I don't think I'll complain about US gas prices anytime soon!
Anyway, back to the mall. There wasn't really anything different in the mall from US malls - stores, food, & those annoying center shops where they try to force their product on you. It was a lot of fun, though, getting to experience something so similar in a new place. When we got back from the mall, I had my first chance to relax a little bit and got to read my book for a while. We're usually pretty busy during the day, but at night we get to relax. We watched The Big Bang Theory, which made me feel right at home!
Today started off pretty normal - breakfast, get ready, the usual. But today Sean and Nicole took me to Piha which is about an hour away. I was going to learn how to surf today (surf being a very vague term for me attempting to stand on a board and mostly just falling a lot, I'm guessing), but I never got the chance. When we first got there, it was really busy so we decided to take a walk up Lion Rock where I got some nice landscape pictures. When we got back we went into the water to swim for a bit because the waves were too small to surf on. We were in the water for about 10 minutes before this siren started going off - there was a shark attack about 20 minutes away from where we were and the man attacked didn't survive. So everyone had to get out of the water, and I'm pretty sure I won't be going back there anytime soon. It was still fun while we were there and even though we never saw the shark, I will be very wary going into the sea. After that excitement, we got milkshakes and went on a trail nearby that lead to a beautiful waterfall.
Well I'm heading out to town tonight - apparently that's a big thing to do here at night. We'll see how it goes!

Can't say I've ever seen a sign like that before, nor do I ever really care to!
