From thames i headed along the coast past beautiful coves and then along the 309 road (another gravel road!) through the forest to whitianga. Along the way a saw a large square kauri tree and a waterfall and also a grove of kauri trees a bit further along. I dumped my stuff at the hostel and then headed to cathedral cove which is a cave made along the beach due to the sea water, but its been made all the way through so you can walk all the way along it. It was really pretty and further along they had a snorkelling trail. As i bought a snorkel for a stupid amount two months ago and still hadn't used i thought this was my chance. I ignored the warnings (where a wet suit, always have two people, have warm clothes to change into) and dived in but the water wasn't cold and i had a lovely swim. i saw a couple of fish and a few nice plants but i only got to the first bouy as the trail took you quite far out to sea and i didn't feel all too confident on my own - (you never know when the stray shark or jellyfish might come around the corner - theres also stingrays just up the road) so i came back in and got changed behind a rock. not once was i cold so must have got a bit lucky with the weather! The next day i headed down the road (after failing to watch the sunrise again!) to do a bit of bone carving. i chose a fish hook that ends in a whales tale. It took two hours to make but it came out really well and i was dead pleased with it. I then headed to the top of the coromandel (along more bendy windy gravel roads) to check out the scenery.
