Aloha from Hawaii !
Where do I begin updating 6 weeks in Hawaii ? Well, I suppose I start at the beginning and take it from there...
Very first day in Hawaii I woke up at 6am, still on LA time, and just full of the joys of spring. That all changed over the next 6 weeks....
First day - I rented out a moped and took a trip to Hanamau Bay. It's a nature reserve, with loads of tropical fish and sea turtles. By the time I got there, I only had about an hour in the water, as I had to have the moped back for 5pm. Getting there wasn't too much of a problem as it was a one way street all the way. The return journey proved to be scarey as hell - being on the wrong side of the road, with buses, cars & trucks whizzing by you at 60 miles an hour (even thought the speed limit is supposed to be 35 ?)and you holding on for dear life, trying to remember all the time, that when you make a turn - go to the RIGHT side of the road. It was a great way to see some of the island, as you could stop and take photos wherever you wanted to, but once was enough for me. I quickly learned about public transport, which is very good here, and as the island isn't that big - will take you anywhere, for only $2.
Next day I checked out Waikiki beach and went for a swim. I was in heaven, as I had yet to see any of the other beaches in Hawaii. The beach itself was very crowded and touristy. They have a small wall built a small bit out to sea, to prevent the waves from coming in, so swimming in the sea is like swimming in a pool. Very calm, cooling and does the job. I wanted more though....
I met an Australian (Catriona) and we took a trip to the North Shore for the day. It's a 2 hour trip up and 2 hours back, but for $2, and with nothing but time on your hands - why not ? We stopped in a place called Waimea Bay. As it was still October, the waves were very small, and the water was just beautiful and clear. Temp in the 90s, a great day was had relaxing on the beach for the day. When we came back I managed to get bitten hundreds of times by the mosquitos and somehow managed to rub against a plant that didn't take a liking to my skin at all and gave me a rash on my back which was very itchy and worrying as I hadn't seen this before and was convinced it was bed bugs! Luckily that turned out not to be the case...
We went to a traditional Luau the next day, where they cook a whole pig in the ground, raise it up and everone feeds on it at the buffet. We never got to see it being raisefd from the ground so I guess we'll just have to trust them on that. The evening was packed full of tradional dancing from Hawaii and Tahiti, Tonga etc..and two volunteers from each table (one of whom was me)were taken up on stage to be taught Hula Hula dancing. It was embarrassing, but a good laugh - (once the tails kicked in...). I uploaded some photos so you can have a laugh...
Now - the next four weeks are kind of a blur, but I'll do my best to summarise...
1. In total - extended stay in Hawaii 7 times, and finally left on the 3rd December.
2. Got a tattoo of a sea turtle on my hip...
3.Birthday was fab - had a good night (etc.. etc..! c'mon, my folks are gonna read this!)and spent the day on Waikiki beach where my friend Sinead frm Waterford brought me a big muffin and lit the matches in it (they had no candles in the shop!), and presented it to me on the beach singing happy birthday.
4. Thanksgiving was a blast - every room cooked and brought a dish (or they could bring beer) I was lazy and went for beer, can you believe that ? me - who cooks anyhing for no reason ? What can I say - drink and will do that to you ! (Oops, sorry Mom!). It was great to have the whole hostel in the one common area together sharing a meal (and beer - did I mention that already ?)
4.Remaining time in Hawaii ? Sun, sand ,sea, drink, sex, , and rock 'n' roll.

I still amaze myself at the fact that I left at all............ and I still never saw a f"ckin sea turtle...

Ah well... on to Oz and Bondi beach until the 15th of December.

So - what happens on the 15th of December ?

Sorry - you'll have to wait for the next entry :-)
