On the morning we first set sail, I woke to find us in our first lock. Gavcikovo is the biggest lock we will go though so I throw on some appropriate clothing and headed up to the sun deck to watch this happen. Your first ever lock is a big occasion and you have to be there to witness it although at 6:30am not very many other passengers shared my delight. The trip from Budapest to Vienna took us about 23 hours as we are heading up stream against the current. It was a very pleasant day just sitting on my balcony watching the countryside glide by.
We docked in Vienna at about 4:30pm. Unfortunately the weather had deteriorated and it was raining and quite cold
Today we boarded the coaches and headed off the Bratislava the capital of Slovakia for a sightseeing excursion. I have caught glimpses of Bratislava first from the train when travelling to Budapest and again from the river when we sailed past on the way to Vienna so it was good to finally see it on foot. We had a local guide who gave us all information overload but she was very good and helped us to understand the political, cultural and economics of Slovakia. The best advice she gave us was where to get the best hot chocolate. It was very cold and windy in Bratislava so the hot chocolate was important and did not disappoint. It was hot, thick and very chocolaty and very warming. The old town of Bratislava is quite small and they are starting to restore the old buildings. Their pride and joy would be the Castle which sits on the hill. It was rebuilt only the 1950's.
After Bratislava we headed back to Vienna where we were free to explore on our own
I have met lots of friendly people on the cruise and have eaten plenty of fine food and wine. The food just never stops so I need to do all the walking tours I can get. The staff are all fantastic but my favourite is Emil who is my steward. He can do amazing things with towels and most importantly puts the chocolate on my pillow every night. I like being spoilt!
