Where I stayed
So we arrived back in Honolulu after spending 6 days in Maui. In some ways it was good to get back to Honolulu as its a little cheaper to stay but it was still sad to leave Maui as its a great place to just laze on the beach with little or no crowds.
We arrived at the Ohana Beachcomber which is just 300 paces to the beach (so they claim, i didn't check) checked our bags and guess what? went down the beach. Waikiki beach was packed but we didn't care so we found a spot, laid out the towels and soaked up some more sun. A perfect spot to finish another book and watch the world go by.
That night we went down Chinatown for an early celebration of Chinese new year. We walked around a little following the noise and excitement of the Chinese dragons chasing fire crackers until we saw a pub that had its entire veranda covered with unexploded fire crackers. That caught our attention and so we went in and checked it out. The locals were very friendly and told us that later on the "dragons" will come inside the pub chasing away evil spirits and collecting one dollar bills. We met Kemo, Belden, Harmony, John and the rest of the crew that were regulars at the "Ke Kei's". We also met Grand Ma (sorry I cannot remember her name) who at 73 was a big drinker and great dancer. We had a great time there and when the fire crackers went off I couldn't believe how crazy the place got! Chinese dragons dancing over the fire crackers, drums and gongs being played really loud and heaps of beer. John gave us some great ideas for places to visit when we reach Arizona. We enjoyed a really great night and would like to thank all the crew at Ke Kei's.
The next day we recovered from the night before and just lazed around Waikiki beach. Shell managed to score a rental surfboard from this guy who had had enough surfing for that day. She found out why just after a little while as the board was a piece of crap. Dings on both rails, chunks of fibreglass missing, and she got a rash on her arms from paddling the "log" around.
We had lunch down at an all you can eat place called "Perry's Smorgy" for $10 it was cool. Inside we saw some sumo's that must of been on holiday so we grabbed a table next to them. We met a lady called Tomoko from Japan and she asked if we could take a photo of her with the sumo's. Tomoko said they were myozuma class sumo's which are basically the juniors of the sport. They were still big boys though. The biggest of them wore a t-shirt saying "lifes easy when your a big dog" classic shirt for a sumo.
We booked a snorkeling tour Hanauma bay for Sunday morning. We couldn't wait to snorkel and old crater.
Unfortunately when we arrived at Hanauma Bay on sunday the beach was closed due to Jellyfish. We couldn't believe it! Closed due to Jellyfish, Shelley still believes that the real reason was that the guys working would rather be watching the super bowl and made up the jellyfish story. Matt our tour guide couldn't believe it either so he took us all on a mini tour of the SE of the island. We got back to hotel and waited for the Super bowl to come on. I don't really follow American football but i must admit that the super bowl was a great game with the New Orleans Saints overcoming the Indianapolis Colts. We were stoked as New Orleans was the next city for us to visit and would be going off!
