After picking up a hire car in Paris (not a great place to learn to drive on the wrong side of the road), we continued on to Belgium. Our initial impressions weren't so good. Charles-Roi was very much like the Melbourne suburbs and ugently in need of some loving care.
As we were driving along, we noticed a Hill in the distance with something on top. We wondered what it could be. Reading the map, we were heading towards Waterloo. However stupid us, it didn't click, we had no idea it was the site of THE battle of Waterloo. We mustn't have paid attention in History at school as we both thought Waterloo was in France! It must have been the Napolean thing that got us!
When we got closer, we soon realised that we had been looking over the actual site of the Battle of Waterloo. The farm land remains and cannot be built on in memory of the battle and those who perished.
A very interesting place to visit (as well as the monument there is a historical video presentation) with great gift shops for the boys who love (pretend) guns and soldiers.
