Well, we thought we would travel into the Redwood Forest (yes, Maui has Redwoods), but it was closed because of brush fires from a couple of months ago. Don't worry, Shannon and I remained calm (maybe not Shannon). She ripped open our "Maui Revealed" book and discovered Haleakala National Park, which is a huge crater, and we were off to our new destination. After driving 7000 feet up to the visitors center (yes, our ears have felt better), we went in and discussed the trails with a ranger. First, we drove up to the Leleiwi Overlook. At 8840 feet, it was an amazing view. Just when we thought the view couldn't get any better, we drove down to the Halemau'u Trail (8000 ft). During this hike, we took most of the pictures you will see. Let us just say that the trip down was easy on the lungs, but the trip up was, shall we say, a little more taxing. As I told Shannon several times on the way back up...Honey, you gotta test yourself every day! Enjoy.
