Monday April 4th 2005
Made a mistake in dates thinking I had less time than I have, so booked my bus to Santiago for today - decision was vindicated though, as the blue sky has gone, to be replaced with heavy rain.

Spent all day on the bus, then stopped in the same place as before in Santiago

Tuesday April 5th 2005
Go to the wrong bus station this morning, but eventually find the right one, and off to Valpairiso, Chiles second largest city, two hours north, again in bright sunshine.

As you enter the city, you se the surrounding steep hills, packed full of colorful houses, and then walk with my rucksack through most of the city looking for my hostel (the city is spread out along the bay).

Whole body is seriously aching now - the effects of the last few days exercise are begining to take their toll!

Wednesday April 6th 2005
Wandered the city today, and was particularily impressed with myself when I recognised a banana milkshake (Leche Con Platano), ordered it, and actully got what I expècted - small milestones in my language learning keep me happy!!

Past the multitude of speeding buses, that aim to hit anybody on the road (and for that matter, on the pavement as well if your standing close to the road - have nearly claimed my life on more than one occassion!)

Up on the many Ascensors Valpairiso is famous for - most are a 100 years old, and are mini cable car trains that take you up the hills - and they look and feel their age. Nice views over the city though, and also learn a new word - pelligro, or danger, told to me by some schoolchrildremn, where I was wandering to an area I clearly shouldnt have been!

Thursday April 7th 2005
Off to Vina Del Mar today, the city come beach resort that sits adjacent to Valpairiso. Followed Lonely Planets advice to catch the train rather than try and work out the myriad of confusing buses, speeding past, but as they appeared to be completly rebuilding the track, figured that the bus was my only option.

Flagged one down eventually that said Vina Del Mar - theres no such thing as a bus stop, and arrive in this relatively pretty city - prettier than Valapairiso centre anyway, and its not called the garden city for nothing.

Walk to the beach, which is a little way out of town, and sit on the rocks as the surf crashes in the bright blue sunshine, once again realising quite how difficult my life is.... After wandering back through the suburbs, go to a totally locals bar.

Eventually catch the night racing car...sorry, the bus, back (There must be so many dead Chileans at the hands of these buses).

Friday April 8th 2005
Bus back to Santiago for lunchtime, and again stayed at the same place.

Met an English guy who has been travelling for about the same time as me, and, for the first time, I was the one who was proficient (OK, Im exaggerating a bit there) at ordering things, as he didnt have a clue!
