Thursday 24th March 2005
Long long bus journey today - El Calafate to Puerto Natales, followed by Puerto Natales to Punta Arenas, which pretty much took up most of the day.

Go with a tout, to yet another slightly downmarket hostel...but its cheap and central, and then briefly wander the town.

Puntas Arenas, pop 120,000, is a slightly rundown city, which doesnt get that many tourists, though has a nice central square with a statue of Ferdinand Magellan.

Get speaking to a Chilean guy, who speaks a little English, and wonders whether I understand the American movie thats on, and is England a muslim country?

Now Easter back at home is a day off work - thats it really, but here, in Catholic Chile, they take it seriously - very seriously - so much so, that everything in town is closed - bar 2 restaurants and one internet cafe, thats it - there´s hardly a person around.

Did however manage to get on a tour, full of Chileans (there dont seem to be many
backpackers around here!), to see the Penguin colony at Seno Otway.

I was at risk of over exposure - after all, I saw penguins in Australia, but these were bigger, closer up, and lots more clustered on the beach, and it was well worth the trip - even if the freezing wind reminded me I was at the end of the earth!

Another tour today - to see the original settlement, Fort Bulnes, established when this area formerly came under Chilean control. Pure wood encampment, with wooden church, wooden buildings, wooden fence etc, and you clearly saw why this place was abandoned in favour of Punta Arenas - the wind and cold was as strong as ever.

From here, you could view where the mainland American continent ends, as well as Tierra Del Fuego (The Land of Fire).

Get back to watch the football - Chile vs Uruguay - both teams have a vague hope of qualifying for the World Cup, but not if they play like this - final score 1-1, with extremely annoying TV adverts that take up a quarter of the screen, during the game, and block out the commentary - about every 5 minutes!
