Today started off early again as we had to get the 07:30 bus to Zhaoqing, a city around 100km north west from Guangzhou. We were told that the journey would take between 2.5-3hours, but in reality it took just 1hour 45minutes – so we ended up being in the city very early.  The plan was to go to the Seven Star Crags Park which is supposed to be the most beautiful area in the Guangdong Province.  The area is said to look like a smaller version of Guilin and the famous mountains/crags that are there.

Once we got off the bus, we were a little confused as we had ended up in a different bus station to where we thought we would be.  A guy came over to us and helped us find our way round the bus station, buy tickets and got us a taxi to the Seven Star Crags Park.  So, much of the time in Zhaoqing was spent in this park.  It's a very beautiful and scenic park – even though the weather was dull, cloudy and cold.  There are huge lakes and many caves.  We went inside 2 caves by boat which were quite amazing.  The caves were very warm and lit up with multicoloured lights so that you could see the various formations on the walls and low ceilings as you floated by on the boat.  Unfortunately we couldn’t understand a word of what the guide was saying as it was all in Chinese.  We walked around much of the huge park, climbing up and down some of the crags, over the lakes and walked into many of the temples that were tucked away on the crags.

After spending around 5 hours in the park taking in some of the scenery we made our way into the city centre getting stuck in a huge traffic jam.  All along the streets were decorations, lanterns and lights as the city was getting ready to celebrate the Chinese New Year.

The journey back to Guangzhou took over 2 hours getting back, but this time we seemed to have a crazy bus driver, who liked to drive faster than all the other cars, swerve and brake suddenly every so often.  We were pretty glad to get off that bus as since being in Guangzhou we’ve seen a number of accidents although most have involved cyclists.
