We landed in Rio at 9pm local time, 1am Irish time this morning and were we glad to be back on solid ground.  The plane crash is all over the news here in Brazil and apparently 3 Irish girls are among the dead - It is so hard to comprehend that a plane can dissapear like that and to think that we were so near to it happening - its scary and not really worth dwelling over.  Anyway we got a taxi from the airport to the hotel which is on Copacabana beach - firstly they are crazy drivers - there were a few hairy moments but we arrived in one piece!  The hotel is expensive for what it is but I guess we are not home anymore and ya you heard right - were staying in a hotel - we need to ease ourselves into this backpacking lark!!  We took a stroll along Copa beach to Ipanema and its all stunning.  The sand is like sugar-pure white and glistening!  It was a bit windy today so not many people out on the beach but loads of people walking/jogging on the cycle tracks next to the beach.  We saw some auld fellas having a game of volleyball on the beach - they are in some shape but sher its easy for them having nice weather to be able to stay active.

On the way back from Ipanema we took a shortcut and we were in a shopping district which was really bustling.  We even spotted an Irish Pub already lol - Shenanigans so we might check that out tonight.  You have to get taxis everywhere here at night, according to Lonely Planet anyway, so its hard to know where to go.  We went back to the hotel and sat on the roof top terrace and watched the sun set behind the Christ the Redeamer Statue which was amazing - really surreal to be here actually.  We went for a lie down and Ror fell asleep at 6!  I wasnīt far behind him and we woke again at about 9.30 but decided we were too tired for dinner so skipped it and woke at 7 this morning!  We didn`t think we would be jetlagged but we obviosuly are a little bit.

Had a nice breakfast in the hotel this morning - there is a great selection.  Ror laughs at me though because my eyes are always bigger than my belly and I eat way too much but sher we`re backpacking now - I have to fill up on grub when I can!  Its drizzling now at the moment so not sure what we will do today.  We need a fine day to visit the Christ the Redeemer Statue which is on top of a mountain - the Cariocas had it erected so God would look down over the city.  We also want to visit Sugar Loaf Mtn which is meant to have lovely views too but tomorrow is meant to be nice so we`ll go then.  Ror wants to go hang gliding from Pedro Bonita so he might do that today.  I will stay on solid ground and take pictures!!

So all is going well here so far anyway.  Rio is such a stunning city and the people seem really friendly so far.  Ror went for a jog this morning actually - he`s fitting in with the locals already!
