After a post-birthday fry-up in Pahia we went to the Waitangi Treaty Grounds. Waitangi is the site of the original home of the Queen's Representative to New Zealand. A 2.5 room house was all that the Governor of New South Wales at the time was prepared to pay for! More significantly, it is where the Treaty of Waitangi was signed obtaining the agreement of the Maori Chiefs to become an official British Protectorate - quite a fascinating story.
We took a quick trip up the neighbouring Mt Bledisloe for a final view of Pahia and the Bay of Islands before we set off across the country to Ahipara on the west coast.
The drive took us through the jungle of Mangamuka Scenic Gorge. We were surprised how many twists and turns the road took for what is essentially the main route from north west to north east. We arrived in Ahipara just in time for some sunset ballet on the southernmost end of Ninety Mile Beach (only 64 miles long really!!)
