It finally stopped raining and we were able to enjoy the consequences of the rain when we visited the waterfalls and caves around Whangarei. The higher than normal water levels made these water features even more dramatic.
In the late afternoon we took the scenic coastal road to Pahia via Russell and the vehicle ferry.
Wildlife watch - glow worms in the caves and pukeho near Russel (we've got a 'Which New Zealand Bird?' book so I'm not allowed to write "a bird with a blue breast that looks a bit like a goose")
Distance travelled - 129 km
