Where I stayed
After an overnight flight we arrived in Rarotonga at 7.00 in the morning to temperatures already in the low 20s. We spent our first three nights staying in a lovely apartment in the east of the island at Muri Beach.
What were on the whole a relaxing few days spent snorkelling and browsing around the main town of Avarua were rudely interrupted by our insane decision to walk the 8km across the island from north to south via the summit of the Island's highest point. It was only 485m climb and descent and only 8km in total so we thought we would cope ok. That turned out to be 8km and 485m of climb and decent through a rough jungle path crossing aand re-crossing streams. We were really proud of ourselves when we got to the top and didn't think that the walk had been too bad. Come the end of the day though we were in ribbons - not only was the descent tougher than the climb but we ended up walking an extra 4km around the island to find lunch at the other side. On the plus side we did find the Little Polynesian hotel, our oasis for the day where we ate lunch and then booked ourselves in for the last two nights of our stay in the Cooks (more on that later).
Distance travelled: 4687 miles by air (and 12km by foot!!!)
