Hello from Singapore! Candice and I have had an awesome last few days here in Singapore experiencing the different culture and city/country. It has been a definite change from Australia but was a good first Asian country to come to as there is English everywhere. We arrived on Tuesday night after flying in from Cairns and had to walk through massive amounts of construction to get to a hostel. Upon check in, we went to the building with the rooms and had to take our shoes off. In many places that you stay, you wear bare feet in the building. We went out for dinner, unsure of proper etiquette, then used the "wet-naps" they gave us and they charged us $0.30 because we used it. No where do they have napkins –you pay for these wipes if you want to use it.

The food has been very cheap and interesting. Candice has tried a lot more than I have but I don't enjoy seafood. Anywhere you walk in the city; there are very different aromas from food to incense. We get everywhere on the MRT (subway) and it costs about $0.80 to get anywhere. In total, it takes only 2 hours to get across the whole country. What isn’t cheap is fruit. Check out the pictures below from a random grocery store we went in. Another different custom they have is the showers are with the toilets and hot water really isn’t around. Cool showers feel good though after sweating all day in the humidity. Things are very clean in the country as well. Gum is illegal so it isn’t all over the sidewalks like back home which is nice. There are constantly people cleaning things here.

We have covered a lot of the country. The first day we were here, the rain was coming down like cats and dogs. Turns out, they got 100mm of rain before noon and 60% of June’s average rainfall! We wondered around Orchard Ave where there are endless amounts of shopping centers after the rain slowed down. Oddly, prices are the same as home with the conversion. We went to Sentosa Island which is pretty much their Disneyland. We saw “pink” dolphins at the dolphin lagoon there and explored the island. A lot of Singapore is still under construction and when the financial crisis hit, a lot of the projects were put on hold but are now in full swing. There are cranes all over the place. The architecture is amazing –see in the pictures below.

We also went to Chinatown, Little India (stayed there the first 2 nights) and the Singapore Zoo and Night Safari. The zoo was awesome –tons of animals although the shows were quite awful. The Night Safari is a different concept. We wondered trails that were dimly lit to see “nocturnal” animals. There wasn’t a ton to see but cool concept.
