Yesterday we woke up and saw the California coast, which is quite different from the Oregon coast, and a lot of redwoods. These trees are incredible, many of them are several thousand years old and fire and bug proof.  They are huge and we got to climb in them and over them.  We even drove the car through a redwood tree (on purpose).  We drove the Avenue of Giants and walked the founder trail in Humboldt Redwood National Park.  We saw the largest tree in this park, which was 362 feet tall.  It had fallen several years ago and had a root bulb that was 3 stories high!  We then continued our trip through the Sierra Nevadas.

Happy Saint Patrick's Day!

Today was a day of wine sampling.  We started early at a place called Jacuzzi’s.  They had a free sampling of many different kinds of wines in the Italian fashion.  We ended up buying two bottles of Aleatico (they were two for one after all).  Next we went to Anaba and sampled another variety of wines, although our favorites were the desert wines, one of which we ended up buying, a Viognier.  Next we went to Gloria Ferrer’s, where we took a tour, which included two glasses of bubbly (which is their specialty).  We learned a bit about how wine is made, and got to see some of the process in the works.  Next we went to Valley of the Moon, which wasn’t as great as the other places, but we still did a tasting, and it was fun, although we didn’t end up buying anything.  Finally, we went to Chateau St Jean, where Shane fell in love with a certain bottle of Cabernet Sauvignon and of course had to take it home.

Tomorrow we’re off to San Fransisco!
