I have made it to my final oversease destination on this amazing trip Round the World... Rio De Janeiro. To say the least, I am very excited and relieved to have made it. It was always my intention to end the trip in one of the party capitals of the world. From what Ive seen of the Brazillians so far, I am up for one great time. Unfortunately, it is not the time of the biggest party in the world, Carnaval, but Im sure I will return if I leave this city in a months time with a smile on my face...

Dont get me wrong, this city can be extremely dangerous for the misinformed. I have read reports of violence, shootings, murders etc. and I have received a first hand account from Stevo, a GAP guide who recently got mugged, bashed and left to die in a gutter after doing all the wrong things... walking under the influence of drugs and alcohol at 4am in a bad area of Rio. He was robbed of everything he had, including his clothing and was left in a coma for 4 days in a dirty and poor Rio hospital. He has recovered slightly... a great lesson for us firstimers to this city. Hes heading back to Lima for 6 weeks of recuperation... good luck Steve!

But... I have been to many other dangerous cities in the world, and unfortunately, the social and economic pressures of large cities force young thugs to mug and rob the wealthier (including backpackers) of their belongings. To say the least, getting taxis from A to B, from anywhere in this city at any time in the evening, IS SIMPLY ESSENTIAL. Even if it is one block... so that is my intention no matter what the cost.

I have many things to do here, but like all destinations travelled to, my priority is to meet locals. From what Ive seen of Copacabana beach, this city is absolutely beautiful, despite it being overcast today.

I have decided to take a month here to unpack the backpack and settle for a while before returning to Australia (Sydney and Melbourne), via Santiago. I have until the 7th of December to soak in the sights, get a Brazillian tan, party in what is believed to be the best nightlife in South America and... maybe learn a bit of Portuguese. Bring it on.
