Flag of Thailand  , Chiang Mai,
Wednesday, March 3, 2010

Hippy Oasis of the north. There are dreadlocks everywhere but they're not all up in your face about it. Just as in Chiang Mai the people are very friendly and don’t try to rip you off too much, and the bongo loving, flea scratching feral ferrang (I mean that in a nice way… trust me it’s a compliment) aren’t too pretentious which is a refreshing change.

Lots of tattoo parlours which is synonymous with chilled out places in Thailand, and it wasn’t as seedy as some places on the islands. Heaps of Mexican and Middle Eastern eateries, making me a very happy little backpacker. Pai is definitely the place you could hang out in for a week and not get bored in the slightest.

350 Baht ($11.60) bungalows on the river in town. It’s apparently more chilled out on the outskirts of town or across the river, but then you have to weigh that up against the convenience of our location so I think we made the right decision and besides we’re only here for 2 nights.

The second day was much of the same. We met a strung out ex hippy junkie (or ex junkie hippy.. it’s seemed pretty interchangeable) who acted like she was straight out of Alex Garland’s 'The Beach’ and we met two American guys that were teaching English – one in a rural town in China, the other in a small town in Thailand. Definitely gave me some things to thing about….

We saw fire twirlers, happy stray puppies, ate a nice breakfast and hung out by the river. Can’t wait to come back with Milli, it’s definitely a cruisey chill out place to bring your lady friend.
