Last time we wrote we said we were heading to Meleka in Malaysia, well that didn't happen. After a bit of research we figured that Meleka is almost exactly the same of Penang were we were before Kuala lumpur so we decided to head straight into Singapore on Saturday.
The bus was supposed to take 5.5 hours but as usual it took about 7. Crossing into Singapore was easy enough, apart from the crappy traffic in Singapore. We got unceremoniously dumped in a suburban area so got a taxi to china town which was supposed to be the cheapest place to stay. The place we intended to stay was booked out so we got a hotel with a room the size of the average bathroom for 90 singapore dollars. The next morning we went on a mission and found a fairly nice hotel close to everything and close to the metro, and it had room to swing a cat
Singapore is a really cool place and is about 50 years ahead of Ireland in everyway. Public transport is great, roads are great, everyone speaks good english and most people over here are fairly affluent. The shopping is unreal as well. There are more shopping centres here than people. Orchard road area is lined with shopping centres and restaurants and is lit up for christmas, way nicer than Grafton Street. We have bought sweet FA due to us being poor backpackers and all that but if you had money here it would be heaven!
We went to Sentosa Island yesterday for most of the day. Sentosa is an island just off the coast and connected by bridge, monorail and cable car from the mainland. we got the cable car which was brilliant, just the 2 of us in an all glass car, a couple of hundred feet about the jungle and then the water! Sentosa island itself has a bit of a disney land feel about it, really plasticy and expensive. The first thing we did after the cable car was go up the Carlsberg sky tower, which was about 400 feet. It was fairly lame really after the cable car! Next we went downhill on luge's which are little go-cart type yokes (with no engine) that fly really fast down a steep track and are stopped by pulling the handle bars towards you. They were really deadly, best fun n ages and really really fast! Next we went to the artificial beach, then went back up the luge hill on chair lifts, (shane was scared)!! All of that innocent fun cost something in the region of 100 euro (gasp)! We went walkabout and talk piccies of the lion statue and stuff and when a storm started we got out of there, sitting in a cable car with thunder and lightning isn't my idea of a good time.
Other than that we've been just hanging out and walking around shopping centres and various other mindless activities!
We're flying to Sydney later today so this is the last Asia entry but we'll keep adding from OZ!
