Where I stayed
We left Munduk on Monday afternoon for Nusa Lembongan, a small, sparsely populated idyllic island off the coast of Bali.
Getting to Nusa proved a bit bumpy. The transportation we had booked to take us to the coast was a no-show so we had to quickly arrange for a new driver. The bumpiness continued -- though not figuratively -- since we took a speed boat across ocean waters to Nusa (Katie, sitting up front, got splashed often). We were greeted by Nusa's warm, turquoise tinted waters after about 40-minutes.
Nusa has few paved roads and we stayed at the end of the main strip, minutes away from the beach. Our accommodations were 3 nights at a place called Shipwrecks in an amazing bungalow (one of only three) featuring a completely open-air shower. The owner, Robin, was a very nice, chatty Australian lady who made us feel completely at home.
We spent our 3 nights/4 days in Bali ...
- Lazing
- Finishing books (Katie read "Shantaram" and Shaan read "Istanbul")
- Playing Black Jack, Egyptian Rat Screw and Bananagrams
- Riding rented bicycles for the day and riding them to breezy "Dream Beach" on the southside of the island (the ultra steep inclines made getting there less of a dream and more like a spin class on steroids)
- Joyriding on a light motorcycle around the island (We both learned how to drive it-- with no accidents!)
- Watching movies on Robin's entertainment system like Slumdog Millionaire (which we saw in an independent NYC theater on one of our first dates), Burn After Reading, Zodiac, and Inglorious Basterds.
- Drinking cheap Bintang and having the occasional chat with other travelers, including a lengthy one with Kevin, an American writer working as a teacher in Abu Dhabi.
We had another bumpy ride across the sea upon our departure from Nusa Lembongan. On to Kuta, one of the most popular (and despised) cities in Bali!
