So we hitch hike out of San Cristobal. Raina says "let's manifest a ride with a trucker going all the way to Guatemala who also wants to buy us dinner at the border."
After we get given all we can eat nacho cheese and free coffee by a gas station we are sick and our stomache's are full and ready to walk to the outskirts of the city once we get there by a couple cars. A semi truck driver pulls over he is really nice and he is going all the way to the guatemalan border in his egg truck. Eggs so we drive really slow all the way there and don't get to border until dark. He pulls over right before the border and takes us out to eat, and buys us a whole chicken, yuck, but I was hungry and it's Raina did all the work manifesting and loves chicken more than anything in the world. so we got a big dry chicken with a thousand dry taco shells and some stinging hot salsa so the dry chicken thats been hanging out with flys and cooking for like 10 hours can slide down your throat. I'm not complaining, I wouldn't have ate otherwise, but I am so sick of being sick I've been sick 3 times in one month, and I'm sick of taco's! Raina eats' meat that has been sitting out, creek water and even occasionaly sing water with swimming creatures in it, but never gets sick ever.
So after eating the driver drives us the rest of the way to the border. Unfortunately this truck only has one bed. I was hoping for bunks so we could sleep and leave in the morning but only semi's in the u.s have two deluxe beds. So full and sleepy and in the dark we prepare to get out and walk the rest of the way to the border as he parks to sleep for the night. He explains how dangerous it is to hitch hike in Guatemala and to even be out in Guatemala by night and recommends we get a hotel.
So now we are leaving the most Dangerous country by American standards and entering the most dangerous country by Mexican standards.
We were told that Mexico is just the safe part you have to go through in order to get to the dangerous Central America.
So with that said we start to walk twords the Guatemalan border at night, what else have we got to do we are in the middle of nowhere. Only problem is, we are in Mexico illegally we never got our passports stamped coming into mexico and later found out while in mexico it's our job to get stamps and visa's and we are going to be in big trouble and fined when we try to exit mexico. So not knowing what's going to happen we walk past this little building that looks official are we supposed to go to that? so we walk back and talk to them.
They look in our passport and want to know where are our mexican entrance stamps and where is our mexican visa. Turns out they are the guatemalan border! and we accidently past the mexican border again! They said we have to walk 4 kms back in the night to the mexican border and get our exit stamp and 4kms back, that would take all night.
Raina pleads with them for a while but they insist.
to tired to walk with our heavy newly accumulated stuff.
Raina talks to a security guard asking him questions in spanish about how to cross in some spanish i don't understand.
then we go back to the guatemalan office to beg again for them to just give us stamps finally they said for 300pesos a piece they would give us guatemalan stamps and notice that we have no exit stamp. Raina talked to someone else he said it shouldn't cost that much we went back and talked to them and they said it's a fine because we don't have stamps, but if we were to go back and get our stamps they would only charge us 20 a piece. Raina wanted to just walk pat and be in guatemala illegally too I didn't really want to, she asked them what would happen if we just walked past they said we couldn't get past because up ahead someone checks our stamps, but the thing is if we walked all the way back the mexican border would probably try to fine us for being illegally in mexico, but we couldn't just pay the guatemalan fine because we didn't have 600pesos!
but screwed with nothing else to do we try to find a ride back to the mexican border to see what happens. With no success I, Savannah realizes my pepper spray is missing so we go back and walk to the guatemalan office to see if it was dropped in front as they see me sadly walking by they are like come her give me your passport!
What did they want? They took it and I realized they were stamping it for free!
Raina hurried in and we got our stamps and kept on going and we realized we could have easily walked into Guatemala without stamps either cuz there were no checkpoints ahead.
But I'm glad we're Legal now!
