The next morning we drove to Hot Water Beach to have breakfast, 9km south of Hahei.  It's famous for its hot thermal waters under the beach.  At low tide you're supposed to dig a pit in the sand, sit in your pit, and relax in your own hot pool.  Well, the sun was getting pretty hot and we decided it was too hot to go bury ourselves in the sand.  So we pushed onward.

We decided to go across the Coromandel Peninsula and drive down a different route.  We took a gravel road from Coroglen to Tapu.  The road was nice and quiet, though dusty, with farmlands mixed with bush.  I felt the drive got a little hairy at times because the road curved around the mountain and visibility was rough around the curves.  A little nerve-racking in a large RV!  Frank had a good time driving it though.

We stopped in Thames to pickup more supplies; got my shoes repaired as well.  The sole was coming off from all our walking!  Then we pushed on up through Auckland and all the way up Highway 1 to Paihia (Bay of Islands).  It was a really long driving day.  We stayed at a holiday park in Paihia.
