We stopped briefly at a cheese factory, where much of the work is still done by hand. One characteristic of Europeans that I like is that they appreciate well made, healthy, and often organic food. The Appenzell brochures proudly describe grain-fed cows and family-run farms and cheese factories.
Then we walked around the main town/capital of Appenzell and ate a typical Swiss lunch, roesti, which is like hash browns. Mine had mushrooms and mountain herbs underneath. Craig order the super traditional version, smothered (literally) with Appenzell cheese and topped with a boiled egg.
Afterwards we went to Oliver's family's home, in another canton (region, like a tiny state), Thurgau. His parents live on the hillside, at the edge of their village. Stuck inside from the overcast weather, we first looked at Oliver's father's rabbits, which he raises for both competition and food. Then we played board games for a few hours. Very exciting vacation :-)
