Koh Tao is THE Scuba destination in Thailand so we decided to get PADI certified here. The Swedes were also planning to go to Koh Tao next so we thought it would be a great idea to save some money and all share a room! When we arrived at Crystal Dive Resort they were super packed and said they had to give us a free upgrade to the VIP SUITE!!! It was unreal. Definitely the nicest rooms we stayed in. There was a rock garden in our bathroom that was half outside. And there was AIR CONDITIONING! We have normally been opting for the fan rooms to save the extra cash. So we snuck the Swedes in and each shared a double bed with down-filled comforters in our luxurious suite. We had such a good sleep in comparison to the slinky-filled mattress on the floor in Koh Pagnang.
Unfortunately that only lasted one night because we had to check out of that room the following day and switch into what we paid for
We started our diving course and it was so much like school! We were taught through cheesy videos and wrote tests in classrooms... just when we thought we left tests behind! We then advanced to some scuba training in the pool. After our first attempt at breathing underwater Nicole was looking at Maria saying “Ok I just want to go home”. It was definitely a little nerve-wracking at first but once we got used to it we couldn’t wait to get into the open water! We practiced things like taking your mask off under water, putting it back on then clearing the water. We also learned what to do when you run out of air...God forbid.
On the third day of the course we wrote our final exam (which we both aced-the Irish guys in our class nicknamed us “the nerds”) and then hit the open water
Unfortunately that evening and the following morning Maria started to feel even worse. We cancelled the last two dives the next morning so Maria could go see a doctor. While we were waiting for the doctor to get there we had a little skype date with Marcela! Nicole showed her all of the coral scratches on her toes that were pretty beat up and disgusting. Cela said Nicole should get it checked out too and Nicole was like “naaaah I can clean it myself”. She finally agreed to get it checked out and was given antibiotics and a warning not to go in the water for a week! Maria was told that she had a throat infection that spread to her ears when she was equalizing so she got antibiotics as well and was scheduled for a check-up appointment in a couple days. At least we were kind of in the same boat!
We lazed around for a few days and changed hotels to a guesthouse that had a mini fridge! We went shopping to the market and bought cereal (Maria’s favourite!), milk, cheese, and tomatoes and tried to have a break from eating out ALL the time
The fateful day of Maria’s check-up appointment came and she still wasn’t feeling so hot. The doctor said it looked like there was a balloon in her ear (we think she was referring to the bulged out ear drum) and said she had to go see a specialist on ANOTHER ISLAND!!! The upside was that we were planning on going to that island before the whole scuba thing got delayed. The next morning Maria was off to Koh Samui and Nicole stayed to finish her last 2 open water dives. It was the first time we were apart on this trip! We successfully reunited on Koh Samui that evening. Nicole was a newly graduated PADI certified diver and Maria had a new prescription and apparently a problem with her middle ear. (Maria got a referral so she can finish her last two dives in Australia and then become certified).
And so the adventure continues in the unexpected Koh Samui...
