Finikounda on mass!!
We left Takis about 11am to head down to the south coast and Finikounda. Our journey started off fine with good roads and quite big roads. Once we got to Gargaliani all that changed! Homer Homer wanted to take us off the red road and down the more direct yellow road but being a big nervous about some of the red roads there was no way I was going to attempt a yellow road so I over-ruled Homer Homer and directed Nick along the red road! I don't know if the yellow road would have been any better but it would definately have been shorter!!! There were quite a few times that we thought we must be on the wrong road because it was no better than a farm track but as we were going through the villages that were on the map we knew we were on the right road just not a very good road! We could see that they are starting to build a by-pass, unfortunately it's not finished yet!!! Again though although the road was a bit of a nightmare if we hadn't gone on it we wouldn't have seen 'Nestors Palace' and as Nestor is quite a feature in the Iliad it was nice to see his place of residence when not fighting in Troy!!
Once we got down to Gialova, on edge of the beautiful Navarino bay overlooking the Island of Sfaktiria where the Greeks finally beat the Turks and gained their independance back in 1827, the roads became more hospitible and enabled us to enjoy the views over the sea! In Pylos we had to take a detour so we ended up going up on a top road so missed seeing the port and town below, although from the height we were it looked a lovely town!!
We finally made it to Finikounda and stopped outside the campsite 'Thines' because there was a caravan that had just pulled in and was blocking the entrance. It only took us a couple of seconds to realise that the caravan belonged to our friends, Odile, Andrea and Basile! We had met in Pompeii and kept in touch via Skype for the last month. We had realised that we would be in Greece around the same time so had arranged to meet up again here in Finikounda around this time, what we didn't arrange was to arrive at the same time!!! It couldn't have worked out more perfectly!
We manged to get set up opposite each other, one of the Germans laughed and said it was like England and France with the Channel inbetween us!! Our awnings were facing each other with the road inbetween us!! We were parked on the edge of the campsite with the Golden beach about 10 metres away and the sea about 15 metres away, perfect!
We all got set up, Nick and I put our awning up first, whilst Odile and Andrea relaxed and watched! Then we did the same whilst they put theirs up!! I think the beers and wine started flowing then and possibly didn't stop for at least a week!!!
We quickly got the BBQ set up and whilst the kids played on the beach we caught up with what we had been doing and where we had been for the last month. Each of us taking different routes to get to Finikounda and when we leave each of us taking different routes to get home. We soon fell into a nice rapport with them and it was like being with old friends that we had know for years rather than days!
