A few days before Christmas (after major problems with my car, that had to get a new Warrant of Fitness and wasn't in such a good shape) Harald (a guy I know from Germany) and me headed off Auckland and went on a road trip for 3 weeks. Within these 3 weeks we travelled all the way down to the southern end of the South Island and back to Auckland, which is up north on the North Island. Next to the fact that we had travel quiet a few kilometers we still had time to see some breathtaking landscapes.
We spend Christmas in Collingwood (next to Abel Tasman National Park) on the South Isalnd before we aimed towards Wanaka following the West Coast. We passed lonely beaches, walked through dense bush, saw the glaciers that almost go all the way down to the sea, enjoyed beautiful mountain ranges and luckily had most of time a reliable travel partner: the sun. Te Anau was the place where we welcomed the New Year before going for a day trip to the Milford Sound (one of the few days when the sun didn't want to join us on our tour). Since this was the most southern point we got to, we headed back to Picton (from where you can take the ferry to the Nort Island) via Mt. Cook. Lake Tekapo, Christchurch and Kaikoura.
I won't try to describe the landscape to you, just have a look at the pictures. All together, we spend a lot of time (too much?) in the car for the three weeks. But the reward the nature gave us was worth a lot of effort. I saw a lot of places I will go back to once I'm finished in the lab (another three weeks) and have some time to go travelling again...
