We are up early and ready to begin the next portion of the trip with friends Greg and Cathryn who live in Venice Beach California. Yea, it's sunny as we leave for Santa Monica airport. Upon takeoff, first up is traversing the Los Angeles International Airport air space. VFR sends us right through the middle of the airport -- jumbo jets to the left and jumbo jets to the right -- our little lady gives a smile and a nod to the big boys as we pass by. We’re headed south to Mexico, the tropics, away from snow and rain and toward adventure and warm weather. There is a sigmet for occasional sever turbulence below 16,000 so we expect a bumpy ride, but that is OK, we’re about to cross our first international border.
We cross the border into Mexico and have our first disagreement as a foursome. Person 1, "Is that snow?"
Person 2, with some incredulity, “No, that’s salt. There is a lot of salt around here.”
Person 3, “No, I think that is sand.”
Person 4, “No, I think that is snow -- look it appears more in the northern shadows and not on the sunny side.”
Discussion ensues, each person supporting initial opinion as clearly being the right one.
Fuel stop at San Filipe. The hospitality and warmth of the immigration folks make up for the colder than expected weather. Isn’t this suppose to be MEXICO!?
