Heineken Cup Final

I know this isn't to do with travels, but Katy and I were given the opportunity (by some very generous friends) to go to the Millennium stadium in Cardiff to watch the Northampton Saints play Leinster in the Heineken cup final. We left full of optimism but with a feeling that we would probably lose having seen that the Leinster team was made up of all of the Irish international stars. Still we were undeterred and donned our Saints shirts and caught the train to Cardiff from Newport where we stayed with Katy's Grandma.

We arrived into Cardiff and there were rugby fans everywhere, in total there were over 72,000 fans in the stadium plus a number of fans left from the Amlin cup final from the previous day. As every pub was packed and we had no chance of getting a drink we decided to go to the stadium early and get a drink there. The millennium stadium was incredible and as the weather wasn't great they had the roof closed which made for a great atmosphere.

We got off to an amazing start and at half time all was looking good. We were surrounded by Leinster fans and so really enjoyed cheering loudly as the Saints dominated the game however I then tempted fate by saying to Katy that we were going out on the town if we won the game. In the second half, Leinster made a record breaking comeback winning the second half 27-0 and so we very quickly became a lot quieter and all plans of a night in Cardiff faded fast.

Unfortunately our jubilant cheering in the first half hadn't gone unnoticed so when the Leinster team scored their points we got a lot of cocky cheers and jibes from the Irish fans. All in good spirit though and every drunk Irish fan wanted to come over and say what a close game it was and how much they respected the Saints game. One old guy wanted to make sure that I understood how lucky I was because and I quote "Your girlfriend is fit, you need to hang on to her".

So.... despite losing and being taunted by Leinster fans we had a brilliant day - can't thank our friends enough for a very kind, thoughtful and generous farewell present!
