Thursday, June 28, 2012

The following morning Jauburger was on breakfast duties and we again talked travels before heading our separate ways. They heading west towards Paris and us east towards Germany and the Rhineland.

We crossed the boarder into Germany and set about clocking up some serious miles on zee Autobanh (over the day we would of clocked up more miles than we had done since we began in Paris). Crusing at an economical 130 most of the time we the throngs of Audi's and the odd turbo charged Porsche's lapped us with ease! En route we ducked into Colonge for a lunch stop. Checked out the Dom / Cathedral and Kirsty lit a candle for her recently passed Aunty. The Dom is the largest in the country and is pretty impressive.....the most interesting aspect I reckon was the gargoyles / embellished drain pipe outlets all over the cathedral....spotting them left you with a sore neck fo sure. We headed down to the Rhine and Cologne Bridge....which Is adorned in millions of padlocks.....every padlock seeming to represent a couple or relationship....still prefer the bra fence in Southland tho!!

We continued South on zee Autobahn and at Kalsruhe...the heads of the Rhine and Moselle Valleys. We opted for the Rhine route and found ourselves winding along the banks of the Rhine looking for a place to pitch the tent. We found one actually on the banks of the Rhine in Oberwesel a small fortified town with a postcard hilltop castle and surrounding vineyards. Being the home of Reisling we locked in a bottle at a local winery.....when in Rome and settled into the campsite just as a thunderstorm rolled in....it seems quite tropical in these parts....admittedly it was pushing the mid 30's during the day. Kirsty hung around the tent whilst i headed down the the Biergarten (Beer Garden) to watch zee Germans get rolled by the Itai's in the Euro's.....I disguised the sly smile amidst the locals!!
