After a lie in we set about the local hypermarkets rounding up supplies / camping gear.....by the end of it we had acquired a tent, an airbed, a sheet, 2 pillows and 2 chairs a solid haul but not quite the comprehensive camping package needed for a decent nights kip! Deciding to wing it and pick up the rest of the gear on the fly we set a course for the Champagne Region in Western France.

The Sat Nav worked its magic avoiding the ridiclously expensive toll highways we arrived in Champagne heartland Eperney....a town with around 200 million bottles of Champagne lying under its streets! Arriving later in the day we headed straight for the 'nearest' campground (15km out of town) but it did turn out to be a vineyard and home to Nowack Champagne! As the heavens opened it was time for a quick dash into town to lock in a duvet and dinner. We spent the evening in the campsite lounge as i watched football with a couple of frenchman and Kirsty jotted down memories of her Nan for her funeral the following day.

The following morning we were awoke by the local baker doing the rounds....the French relationship with bread is amazing!! They absolutely love it i'd say it even more important than binge drinking to students, football and beer to the English or even rugby to the Kiwi's!!! After a few croissants we headed to the nearby city of Reims. We parked up and strolled the city wandering past the Cathedral Notre Dame and G H Mumm Champagne HQ. After another sneaky lunchtime baguette and cafe (coffee) we headed back to Epernay and locked in a tour of the Moët and Chandon Champagne Cellars. To be honest it was pretty awesome....a 28km long network of underground cellars housing over 20million bottles of Moet & Chandon and Dom Perignon! At the end we toasted our tasting / full glasses of Moët to Shirley....and we were also tempted by the $6000 bottle of vintage Dom Perignon but left it for next time. Dinner was again bread, pâté, cheese....typical but thrifty at about 3 Euro all up!!
