This place is truely crazy, I've been here a week and still trying to get used to the place. I started off in Bangkok with the pollution so bad the sky barely seems blue, the traffic is just at a standstill most of the time. I've seen the lady boys, the prostitutes on every corner and the numerous old men arm-in-arm with the 18 year old girlfriends. It can be a pretty disturbing! There are extremely beautiful parts though, with wats (temples) everywhere. I found these just breathtaking with the detail and decoration that goes into them.
I arrived just in time for the Bangkok hat frisbee tournament, and said the one thing I didn't want was to be on the pink team! Guess what, it didn't work out! The tournament was on the Thai army barracks site, which was interesting as there were troops doing training exercises in full combat gear and guys using the firing range around us! The tournament was cool though, with a higher standard than I expected and a load of people (mainly ex-pats). The party was interesting too, with a numbe of cross dressing players, vodka jelly and free beer. The heat and humidity were probably the I have ever experienced, and I have no idea how much water I got through! My team managed to come out of nowhere and win the thing somehow, which was a great end to a great weekend!
From there I went to the ancient capital, Sukhothai, which had some amazing ruins to see. Another truely beautiful place with the ruins set among nice backdrops. Sadly there are no photos to show as the sand I got in my camera in Tasmania has caused problems with it! I've got it fixed now though, I'm just looking for someone who has been to Sukhothai so I can steal their photos!
On to Chiang Mai in Northern Thailand, a much more cultural centre than busy commercial bangkok. I have taken a cooking course, which was surprisingly easy and the food is amazingly fast to make. I'll definitely be looking for victims to feed when I get home!
I've decided it's time to slow the pace down a bit and am heading to a 10 day meditation course in a temple here. I've been interested in it for a while and figure now's a good time to give it a go and see if I like it. It's pretty restrictive, with only talking to your teachers, dressed all in white and not eating 12-6 the next morning (this I think will be the hardest for me!). I think it will be pretty hard, but then I guess that's the point! I'll see how it goes, and I might end up quitting on the first day due to hunger!
