Kitchener is famous for 2 things.

Firstly for changing it name from Berlin during World War One after hostilities from non-German residents. In 1916, a movement began to change the name of the city. It did not have the support of the wider community. A contest was held to choose a new name and the results were ridiculed. When news hit that Britain's Minister of War, Lord Kitchener, was killed in action off the Orkney Islands, his name was put forward as a possible replacement, and the whole matter was put up to a referendum and the rest is history.

Secondly, Kitchener still likes to remember its German heritage and is home to the Bavarian festival of Oktoberfest, the largest of its kind in North America and is believed to be the largest outside of Germany. This is also our sole reason for visiting this rural city.

The whole of thanks-giving was spent intoxicating myself in the drinks tents and a few local bars. Unfortunately this Oktoberfest was a big disappointment. It had the Oompah bands and locals dressed in the traditional Bavarian clothing but that's where the similarities between this festival and a German Oktoberfest ends. For starters they were only selling Canadian beers on draught and there were no steiners. Not exactly very German!!! It was that bad our Australian friend caught his bus to Toronto a few hours early.

Still didn't stop me and the Scotsman (Andy) drinking all day and most of the night, once again we failed in pulling the Canadian locals, ending up at an American flat to continue the drinking after the bars closed at midnight. The rest of the night get alot more hazy although I do remember talking to a guy with no legs.
Somehow got back to the hotel, woke up feeling rough and spent the rest of the morning hugging the toilet. Fully regretting those shots of tequila with those Canadian girls but overall a good day out.

photos could take a while to upload. Stuck in internal memory in a broken camera

Having fun it looks like - think you know the meaning of life so easy on the drinking we want you back..

Australians are always good company though!
