Where I stayed
We got a taxi to KL Central train station where we booked on a bus transfer to the airport. At the airport we checked in and went straight through to departures where there were no facilities, let alone anywhere with booze so we had a chair massage with lots of Asian people 'cheeping' next to us (ear plugs got an airing).
Flight landed in Kota Kinabalu where Paula promptly had a KFC (as you do in Borneo) and then negotiated a taxi for the two and a half hour journey to Mount Kinabalu National Park.
Once we departed the airport and town, the ascending roads where winding and congested, and the air temperature became colder and colder towards the top...at one point we could barely see fifteen metres ahead for the mountain mist that had engulfed us
We were both blown away with the scenery that unfolded during this drive, vast rainforest covering mountains and deep valleys, small mountain-side communities living basically but peacefully in these beautiful surroundings (we wondered if they truly understood just how beautiful the environment they were living in really was?)
We also wondered what wildlife those trees camouflaged, Paula in particular wondered about the creepy crawlies hidden beneath, baring in mind our impending visit to the Danum Valley Field Center in three days time.
Finally we arrived at Rina Ria Hostel, a basic guesthouse but with stunning panoramic views overlooking the valley and the National Park. We settled in with a couple of beers on our balcony and watched the sunset before going for our supper of Tom Yum soup with a plate of garlic greens...
