We set off for the mountain and began our ascent shortly after 9am. The plan was to reach 2720m above sea level, a 1000m/8km climb to complete Stage 1 of the ascent. It was pretty heavy going but we reached our destination in just under 3 hours and continued on to the Maundi Crater after stopping briefly for lunch.
Our guide turned out to be the World Record holder for the ascent up the Mandara Route to the summit - 14hrs 50mins to get up and down again seemed to defy all reality - particularly given our relatively slow progress for just the Stage 1 section! He has climbed to the summit over 40 times so I guess he has had some pretty good practice! It usually takes 6 days...his amusement was constant at the huffing puffing red faced Mzungus unable to talk as we climbed further
Both of our hands had swollen up and we had puffy sausage fingers by the time we had finished, much to our amusement!
We returned to the campsite for a well earned beer and a relax. Cook group worked out really well with everyone making cullinary suggestions and all pulling their weight - not always the case! James, Naomi, Jane and Paula concocted a tangine with spicy rice that seemed to go down pretty well with 25 out of the 26 hungry mouths!
After dinner, we had a few drinks and lots of laughs. The glove of love, the alternative use of a cheesegrater, the 'safe' words - and it is now becoming clear that we are gelling together much better.
Bring on Zanzibar!
