Where I stayed
Friendship Guesthouse
'Welcome to tourism Satan' - road sign at crossroads in Chiang Khong, Thai border.
24hrs from Bangkok..
..and I'm finally over the border, in Northern Laos. One taxi, one overnight train, two buses, a rusty clapped out tuk-tuk and a longboat over the Mekong deposited me - lifeless but intact - to the sleepy border town of Huay Xai, on the Laos side of the Mekong River. That's twenty four hours door-to-door and I'm positively shot.
It was actually the flip of a coin that determined the destination, a last minute whimsical decision made as I was passing through Northern Thailand. Tails would have meant me writing this from Burma. But for now the focus is on Laos. The Mekong looks like a mass of fast-flowing chocolate, a ferocious storm is on its way over from Thailand and I'm just off to grab a feed on the edge of it all.
There'll be no phone for a while..
