The Grande Finale..
'Tonight? Hmmm.. we should get maggoted..' - Charlie Weir
The ride from St Helens to Launceston (Lonny) was the longest yet. Not that it's far, just that we made a complete meal of it by zig-zagging all over the interior of Tasmania to get there, taking in places like George Town (toilet stop) Lilydale (leg stretch) and Scottsdale (biscuit stop) and generally blazing through most of the B roads in between, just for the sheer thrill of the ride. Still can't get over the roads here.
Our arrival in Lonny prompted Charlie to kick off like an excitable child. He has his moments does Charles, especially when he comes across dead animals - but that's another story, and really, we had just spent the day having the time of our lives screaming through a hundred tight corners before rolling into civilisation, and the city itself - a thriving gem of a place, was very much alive. It was Saturday night remember, and with the music booming from every angle, the random faces engaged in excitable weekend banter, stubbies in hand, ladies tarted up to the nines and the fact that we were pretty much coming to the end of our full circuit of Tasmania - an experience that will undoubtedly leave its mark forever - celebrations were well due.
So... we've just checked in to a place called the Lloyd's Hotel - a classic Aussie bar/restaurant/accommodation combo with private parking and as it's Saturday night they've got a band on from late till about 3am. Seems there are some great eateries around here too. And the night is young. So I'd better leave it there, Charlie's off somewhere getting the beers in..
