I never realised how pleasant Picton was. That said I only passed through it briefly the last time. Like the other backpacker bus networks that operate around New Zealand, the Stray bus whisks you away to your next destination the minute you step off the ferry.
So to arrive here this afternoon on a glorious sunny day with the full freedom and flexibility that a campervan provides was a proper breath of fresh air. It didn't take much to warm our cockles either. Just sitting lazily in the immaculately tended gardens with the full expanse of the Queen Charlotte Sound splayed out right in front of us twinkling like a thousand diamonds is a pleasure in itself, really.
Chike got the go ahead for another two weeks the other day so the future's looking brighter. As a result we've decided to dabble deeper in the Marlborough Sounds. As quaint as Picton is, it's still Picton - a tiny little village marking the gateway to some proper stunning scenery and of course a ferry over to the North Island.
Tomorrow we press on, to a little place called Portage on the banks of the Kenepuru Sound. It won't mean all that much right now so we'll wait and see what comes of it. Just wait till you see the pictures..
