Dean left for Welly the other day. Even though it was the last of my shifts, I managed to squeeze an hour or so out to catch some time as he was leaving early the next morning. We sat down by the lake till midnight and then I dropped him back at the hostel. Once again, the goodbye was emotional. What is it about goodbyes with him? It's bizarre. I drove past his hostel the other day and realised with a sinking feeling that he's gone. I'm really gonna miss him. Over the last couple of weeks we've shared plenty of time and he'll definitely remain one of the handful of significant people I've met so far. He's not aware of it but he's so inspirational. It's hard to explain. He's sort of got the basics right at the right age, the sort of basics I didn't get right at that age and have had to try and consciously kick my own arse and make the changes myself as I've grown. I'd love to see him in five, ten years time.
The weather here has been fantastic lately and wildly varied. Yesterday was...wow! I'd been sitting out on the back balcony half asleep in my shorts soaking up a few rays. It was stinging hot, to the point of either applying thick sun screen or being sensible and getting dressed. A couple of hours later, the 'roar' came from the south-west. Different? Thermals, a warm top and thick winter jacket were quickly located. It's stuff like that that impresses the hell out of me and is what I really love here, the way nature and the elements give you a quick nudge now and again, a subtle, gentle reminder of the respect they deserve..
