Well the strangest thing happened last night. I was lying in bed engaged in a painful attempt to yawn out of a tooth gap of about 10mm, when I got the most awful taste in my mouth, but an incredible sense of relief in my right ear - which up until then had been ringing in agony. I got up and ran to the bathroom and let out a sudden stream of nosebleed. I mopped myself up and returned to bed with a knot of toilet paper wedged up my nose. As I tried to get to sleep, the pain was a completely different one to that over the last few days. Something had happened. Something had popped and made space for other things like ears and jaws. I was still in pain but just knew that tomorrow would bring a different day.

Well I was right. I felt a lot better this morning. A pain that I didn't mind - I'm on the mend.

I got up just before 7am and left the other seven in bed. I had only met one of them the night before. A lad a bit younger than me called Leon from Oz. He'd been skiing in Queenstown and was staying till Thursday then heading back home. He seemed generally okay and understood about the pain and lack of conversation.

So, I was back out having a stroll round Auckland. Went down to the harbour area where there are various ferry points, bars and restaurants. One of the ferry operators had just placed a blackboard sign outside offering a special discount for the first fifty customers to buy a return ticket to Waiheke Island. So I did. I'm not going to use it yet thought as I want to spend a good few days there when I'm fully recovered, ready and raring.

As the day's gone on I've felt a hell of a lot better though, luckily. Never did get to see the doc.

Things are looking up!

Met the other 'roomies' when I got back. What a mix! Two Irish girls and an Irish lad, a German girl, a 'Turkish' German lad, an 'Iranian' German lad, Leon from Oz and ole 'Brummy' me! They all seemed a lively bunch and friendly enough so I was more or less sorted.

Sat up and had a couple of beers with Leon in the evening who had gone and got take out - then turned in for an early one to try and sleep off a bit more jet lag. I am still physically knackered.
