The first day we got off the boat was July 17 when we were in Helsinki, Finland. I lived in Finland for a few months as an exchange student when I was 16, but didn't spend much time in Helsinki, so it was just as new for me as for Scott. We just walked the town and the highlight was the Rock Church. Two brothers wanted to build a non-denominational church in the city and they got permission to bomb out the center of a rock with dynamite. The Church sits about 40 feet underground in this rock - the rock is the actual walls. It is a round structure with windows around the top of the walls that let in beams of light that are offset by a round copper ceiling. It was very unique and even though it was covered in tourists it had a very warm feel to it.

After that we walked and saw the typical buildings around town and visited the market down by the water. We refrained from buying any raindeer products, but of course had to pick up a Christmas ornament. After all, Northern Finland is where Santa lives. After a bit more strolling around we made it back to the boat where we were getting pretty good at eating our way thru the day - buffets and sit down dinners. This time on the cruise we were the old married couple and hit the nighttime shows...and I must say they were pretty good!
