Melbourne

1/23/06
Another travel day - this time from the Westin Sydney to the Westin Melbourne, not a bad trip. We made it into Melbourne just fine, picked up our rental car and started to realize the craziness of this city. There was only a huge book of maps in the car and when we realized we couldn't find our way out of the airport, we asked the Avis desk. Since there was a $36 charge to use their freeway, we opted for city streets. This would be so bad except the have this thing only in Melbourne called the hook. To make a right turn you have to wait in the far left lane and cut across traffic when the light turns. It's a nightmare. We made our way to the hotel without having to take any right turns that required the hook! We rested with a mellow night after that adventure - Amy got a massage and Scott worked on the computer.

Australian Open Day! We have had these tickets for months and were excited to see that we would get to see Maria Sherapova take on Petrova. We walked to the park in time to check everything out which didn't take too long. After being at the US Open last year, the park in Melbourne is so small comparatively. So we decided to grab a beer and found out that Heinekin was the sponsor and they were everywhere. And Rich Anthony told me early on some rules about dating Scott Covey included never drinking Heinekin! Luckily we found one other kind of beer hidden at the snack stand, so we were both able to have a few. Since the Rod Laver Arena was small, our seats were actually pretty good. We enjoyed the match and found our way back to the hotel thru the city catching most of the major buildings and sites. We even found a Starbucks that had the only good cup of coffee I've had since we left.

Another driving day for Scott. Today is the reason we got the convertible - to drive along the Great Ocean Road. This is Australia's equivalent of PCH in California. We had a very sunny pleasant day - it was about 75-80 degrees out. Which we were very happy about since that convertible ended up costly us a fortune. We drove up the coast stopping at many look out points and just enjoying the views for about 4 hours. Then we stopped for lunch in a small town, got eaten by mosquitoes and headed back to the hotel on a much quicker route - about 3 hours back. We both got a little burned on our face, but nothing we couldn't handle. Back at the Westin we enjoyed our last meal at a discount and it was fantastic! A pretty nice day, especially considering it was supposed to be 100 degrees tomorrow.
