Flag of France  , Basse-Normandie,
Friday, May 18, 2012

This morning we drove west to Omaha Beach - one of the landing points for D-Day June 1944. My entire education on WWII comes from "Saving Private Ryan" and "Schindler's List" so I admit that looking at sand on beaches didn't exactly hold my interest.

After a short 40km detour (I really should have taught Steven to read a paper map a month ago) we visited the American Cemetery. Close to 10,000 are buried here from the conflicts in Normandy during June and many more remembered on the Wall. We cruised home slowly along the coast road through tiny villages and past old stone houses. Charming part of the world.

I found some internet in the local hotel, so had a very nice coffee, served by a very cute French waiter and wasted a delightful evening in a peaceful atmosphere.

Later I wandered down the beach for another spectacular sunset and then retired to the lounge where the only thing on TV was "X-Men 2" overdubbed in French!
Mmmm Hugh Jackman with a French accent <sigh>

The only thing better than X-Men in French was..... "The Blues Brothers" in French!!!!!!
