Since I did not get all my uploads done last night – it got too cold – I went right back at it this morning next to the office. We'll be going to the backcountry for the next week with no internet nor water and electric hook-ups. So we’ll be living off the grid. I have a Honda Generator with me which will power everything in the RV except for the AC – bring out the fans!!! We were suppose to head out of the park by 11 which was the earliest I’ve ever had to leave. Especially since our next stop at Kodachrome State Park was only 25 miles away.

Since this was a huge campground I figured they would not mind if I left a little late. As long as I started to pack up at 11 that would be good for me. We did start at 11 to pack up but took our time. Driving through the campground to the dump station with all the trees around turned out to be a hard drive. Pooh had to walk along the RV to make sure it was not going to kiss a pine tree. By the time we left it was noon. But our drive today was only 30 min. so we were not in a rush.

Going to Kodachrome SP we had to drive a steep downhill into Bryce Canyon. So most of this drive had my foot on the break and in low gear instead of on the gas pedal. At the bottom of the hill was the nice little town of Tropic with a few motels and restaurants to serve the Bryce Canyon tourist. A few miles down the road was Cannonville which just had one hotel and one gas station. This is where we turned down a small road that took us to the park in 7 miles. The road was paved but was so small the speed limit was 30. It was a long 7 miles through the ranchlands of Southern Utah. Finally, the state park sign to turn left and the end of the paved road. Go straight and it is a 40 mile gravel road through the Grand Staircase – Escalante National Monument which was nothing but wilderness and was larger than some states back east.

The park is famous for its tall stone spires or monoliths that just stick out of the ground. Hard rock that had yet to be eroded. Since this was a dry camp we had to fill our RV tank with water. We pulled into our sight and set up the RV. You could only use your generator from noon until 4. So we kept that running to get our fridge cold, the fans running, and to charge up anything we could. I cooked a lunch of Tuscany Chicken which turned out pretty good. Then we just relaxed around the RV until 4. Then we turned off the gen. and went out to hike a few trails. Since this is a state park, dogs are allowed on the trails. So Quique really had a good time running around and being an adventure dog instead of bumming around in the RV.

First we took the Nature Trail which was only a half a mile. There were a few stone monoliths just sticking out of the ground for no reason. Beside us was a slick rock hill that Quique had no trouble with climbing to the top. Back out across the road we took the 1.5 mile Angels Palace which took us up on top of a butte overlooking the park. Quique had the best time on this one as she was climbing every peak and going to every edge to look down 500 feet. We were always afraid she would slip and fall. She already used up one life on the trip, after all. What a daredevil dog. From the trail we got in the truck to drive to Tropic just to get some cell service so Pooh could talk to Tanya and some other friends to tell them we were in the sticks and had no coverage. Since we were in town, I decided to get a bit to eat at the local pizza joint. For a small town this was a crowded and popular place. So it must be good. I got a supreme pizza which did hit the spot. From Tropic we drove back to the RV and chilled out for the night.
