Just outside Atlanta I started to smell something burning. First I thought it was someone's brakes. Maybe my tires. I kept an eye on my temperature gage in the truck thinking it was the motor. The truck was running great but the smell was still there all the way to the Alabama state line. Then I turned the vent on to try to get rid of the smell and the SMOKE came out. I calmly pulled to the side of the highway and popped the hood to see what was up. Then Pooja yelled "FIRE!" We quickly took out all the valuables including the Quique dog. I ran to the RV to get the fire extinguisher and put out the fire quickly. It was in the back of the engine on the passenger side. My first guess was an electrical fire since the motor still ran pretty well. We called 911 but it took them over 15 min. to come out. It was a volunteer fire department and they were great when they got there. They used their hose to put the smoke out as it was still smoldering. They thought it was my secondary battery so they unhooked it and thought I’d be OK to drive it to a mechanic. We called our mechanic friends in Florida and they pointed us to a place in Carrollton which was 25 min. away. That was not bad so we would not have to get the truck and RV towed which is a pain in the rear. The funny part of the ordeal was our dog – the grass on the side of the highway was high and wet so she would refuse to move and walk through it. The bad part about this was I took no pictures to record all this fun but at the time I was not thinking about that. Back on the road we drove back to Georgia to Allen’s Automotive. A couple of “good ol-boys” helped us and ID’ed what they thought the problem was. Pooja and I were already thinking about what to do if this repair would take several days. After all, a portion of the area under the hood was scorched. I guess we could have my mom pick us up and take us home. However, within a few hours the part was in and we were on our back on the road. The cost was only $130. Not a bad repair when your truck caught on fire. So a little three hour delay to the trip.
The remaining drive through Alabama and Mississippi when off without incident. We ate lunch at a Flying J in Birmingham which consisted of Indian style ramin noodles. What we do to stay on the cheap is we park in an RV space, take the generator out for power, and hang out in the RV to cook lunch. The only thing we cannot run off the gen. is the RVs AC. But we did have a big fan to keep us cool. Our destination was Vicksburg, Mississippi which we got too around 6:00.
We stayed at the Ameristar Casino RV park which is close to the river. The park was not all that scenic but for $22.50 a night you get full hook-ups (electric, water, sewer), good Wi-FI, a pool, cable TV, and a free shuttle to the casino. When we got the RV set up it was 101 degrees inside. So it took a long time for the AC to cool it down. We got our showers and took the shuttle to the casino. Now being the cheap skate that I am, I did not lay down one cent there. We were there for the buffet. After a long drive and a crazy day, we deserved some good food. And for a buffet, the food was very good. Pooja gorged on deserts. It had an overlook of the flooded Mississippi River where we saw the sunset. I took some rib bones back to our dog of which she was pleased. Back at the RV we did not last long before we crashed – needing lots of sleep for an even longer drive tomorrow to the middle of Texas.
