Saturday, May 9, 2009 -- Saturday Morning, Barstow, CA -- Almost There!

Hello Again!

We made it all the way from Flagstaff, AZ to Barstow, CA on Friday and had some great stops in between. In addition to perfect driving weather, we had quite a chance encounter at a very tiny town called Truxton, AZ. There's a classic American-type diner there called the Frontier Cafe that's well-known among Route 66 types. Truxton is away from the Interstate, so you get a real feeling of being "out there" when you go through it. The Frontier Cafe is the real thing, having been there for well over 50 years. The food and the people who work there are great, too. When we stopped for lunch, we met a group of bikers who came all the way from Poland JUST to drive 66! The guy who seemed to be the leader of the group spoke English well and within 10 minutes, we all became friends, simply by talking about the wonderful things that can happen when you travel and take in everything around you. We saw them again in Oatman, AZ some time later.

In order to get to LA, either on 66 or the Interstate, you must pass through the Mojave Desert. This terrain is as tough and desolate as it gets and the temperature reached 106. Despite that, we paused at a little roadside stop and turned off the car to experience dead silence. The wind...and ONLY the wind...was all we could hear. When a car approached, you could hear it before you could see it and after it passed, its sound faded into infinity. I experienced this in 1993 when I first drove the route and wanted to do it again. It's just one of those things you never forget.

We're headed into LA and will connect with our friends Art and Diane Booth and their family this afternoon. That will complete the trip...over 25-hundred miles in six days. More to come!
