Friday Sept 26th:

We stayed in Grants NM last night. I thought about trying to get all the way to Gallup to cut into today's mileage, but thought better of it. We got a good start after a continental breakfast provided by the KOA folks. Not much to it, but a nice feature that allows an early start and no dishes or cups to do a final clean-up on.
We had about 340 miles to do and all went well. I failed to lock the storage compartment on the curbside and it opened on a rural road north of Snowflake. Ruth went out and locked up, nothing lost but a few minutes. We stopped in Payson and Ruth made sandwiches in the trailer. After a little rest and fuel, we headed "down the hill".
If you read the last entry, you may remember that I said we would make a decision to go stay in Payson or stay on the road because going "down the hill" is tiring. It is not a long drive, a little over 80 miles, but 40 of it is about 5 ups and downs on long 6% grades. It is all nice road, just a little stressful. We headed home.
We rolled in at home about 3pm and began to unload in the 100+ heat. K.C. was really happy to see Ruth, but Phoenix was unaccounted for until late in the evening. We will pick Chickie the lovebird up tomorrow.
We left on Wednesday, September 3rd and returned on Friday, September 26th; and covered 3,700 miles over 6 states. We stayed in the 5th wheel 19 nights, with Harold and Peggy 3 nights and with cousin Linda 1 night for 23 nights on the road. Gas mileage for the truck was 11.6 overall with a high of 13.5 and a low of 10.4. We paid as much as $4.40 and as little as $3.78 a gallon for diesel. The $4.40 was in the path of hurricane Ike and fuel skyrocketed until the threat of "gouging" penalties became public. The typical price was $3.98.
I hope you enjoyed the trip. Let me know if you did! Use my email for feedback--
