After leaving Rome we drove south to our next destination: Capo Vaticano and the beautiful azure blue waters of the Calabria region.  But not so fast, how could we possibly not stop at Pompeii?  Right, we couldn't, so we stopped and let me tell you, Pompeii deserves a lot more than just a stop by.  Plan your visit or you'll end up like us, just seeing half of what you wanted to see before you give up in the scorching hot sun.

Get a good tourguide, we decided to go with an audio tour and that did not work out well.  The city is vast and it takes quite some walking to get from A to B and there are so many questions that will remain unanswered without a tourguide:  Why are there stepstones in the middle of the road? Why is the sidewalk so high? The "road" couldn't possibly have been a "sewage" system, or could it?  We missed so much, for example did we not see any of the bodies and no frescos, well except for one that is... The one in the brothel.  Here's one funny fact that we did pick up.  Not everyone was well spoken in Latin and so they had murals on the wall that you could point too.  No conversation necessary.

Here's another interesting thing.  Pompeii turned into the favorite Roman getaway. You know when you have to get a way from the hustle and bustle of the eternal city.  Pompeii had it all, great houses, "dry cleaning" houses, amphitheatre, at least 25 street fountains, a very ingenious aqueduct, market, bars, restaurants, sports arena and so forth, not to forget the brothel(s) and court.

Pompeii is really worth seeing, but do yourself a favor and plan your trip, you'll love it.  Maybe even stay overnight at the gorgeous Amalfi coast?  If I could change a thing that's what I would do - add another stop.
